The Job:
This position heads the Business Administration Department of Backcountry Journeys—leading the people, processes, and controls that keep the company compliant, profitable, and running smoothly every day.
Your team is the backbone of the company, the support pillar – ensuring all necessary functions for our other two major departments are fully supported so they can operate unhindered – t’s crossed & i’s dotted with 110% accuracy.
This department (and thus this role & your team) is responsible for ensuring our Financial Records are accurate & reconciled. It is also responsible for the payroll, HR, process & systems of the company as well as managing state compliance, Commercial Use Authorizations for various land use areas.
You are directly responsible for the Leadership, Management & Accountability of your department. You establish cadence, KPIs, and accountability so the work gets done right and on time. When gaps appear, you diagnose the root cause and fix the system.
As a Director at Backcountry Journeys this position supports the Leadership Team in acting role. While not an official member of the Leadership Team, this role has a clear path to succession if successful.

Core Responsibilities
Leadership, Management & Accountability
Set goals, dashboards, and meeting rhythms; manage workload and priorities; coach, hire, and develop admin talent; enforce accountability with clear standards and consequences.
Profitability
Ensure spend isn’t wasted; catch critical errors & drive cost discipline; implement operational efficiencies; lead budget vs. actuals reviews and corrective actions.
People/HR
Oversee HR administration, recruiting coordination, onboarding/offboarding, manmage company wide performance reviews, documentation, and employee records in alignment with company policies.
Compliance
Ensure adherence to federal/state/local regulations, employment laws, licensing, data privacy, and record retention. Oversee the administration of state & federal payroll taxes, company 401k & land use permits for the various National Parks & use areas.
Insurance
Maintain company insurance portfolio (GL, auto, workers’ comp, E&O/professional, travel/vendor-related as applicable); manage renewals, COIs, claims, and coverage optimization.
Policies & Procedures
Author, update, and enforce company policies and SOPs; build a centralized, easily accessible policy library; train teams and monitor adherence across the company.
Finance/Bookkeeping Management
Oversee AP/AR cadence, close checklists, reconciliations, vendor management, and documentation standards; manage Finance staff & handle monthly closes, filings, and year-end.
